Two year starter. First-team All-Big 12 and consensus All-American in 2025. Decent size and length for a corner. Abney is a high football IQ player with excellent technical skill. Has shown leadership communicating checks on the field. Has experience in a wide variety of techniques and coverage concepts. Plays press and off man along with quarters, Cover three and hard corner Cover two. As a press corner he can be physical with a two and off-hand jam and handles twitchy receivers, ignoring the first move away from leverage. Shows excellent footwork and transitions. Keeps focus on the receiver and has been effective mirroring throughout the route. Has enough speed to stay in phase deep and has a recovery burst if separated. In off coverage will pedal, or press and bail along with an occasional big cushion catch technique. Effective showing press and bailing to off zone coverage. Gets into a lateral shuffle/run allowing him to see the threats and the quarterback. Route recognition and reactions are a major strength. Looks for work in the deep quarter and third and is adept at closing voids in overlapping zones. Solid hard corner technique balancing high/low routes. Consistent depth getting under intermediate routes and breaking up to the flat. Quick plant and drive breaking with the ball in the air. Has ball skills with a knack for getting his hand to the catch point. Solid in run support with fundamental tackling skill, he consistently breaks down and makes tackles on the perimeter. Takes an occasional extra step reacting to route breaks, especially on quick out routes. Occasionally has trouble with double moves. Playing with his back to the boundary he occasionally drifts out of position. He may lack top end speed so workouts will be important. Shows the tools of a solid NFL corner in a zone heavy scheme.
