Three-year starter. Team captain. First-team All-Big 12 and Defensive Player of the Year honorable mention this past season. Shows sizeable range over the top and can succeed in both one-high and two-high coverages. Great at reading and recognizing different route concepts, and puts himself in position to take away threats. Reads quarterback eyes to put him in position both downfield and shallow. Solid speed allows him to carry tight ends downfield in man coverage. Suitable closing speed when he falls behind and can catch up quickly. Proficient transition quickness to fire downhill on underneath passes. Vision to track and play the ball in the air with great timing; comes away with interceptions. Uses violence and heavy hits at the catchpoint to force the ball out and cause incompletions. Instinctual run defender who rarely deviates from his gap responsibility. Fires downhill to fill run lanes in the box with authority. Maneuvers through bodies in the box to find the ball carrier. Willing to initiate contact and throw his body into all types of players. Excellent tackling fundamentals; breaks down and attacks with low pad level to bring down ball carriers of all sizes. Makes plays with extra effort. Quicker receivers can separate with speed and stutter-steps in man coverage. Gets caught peeking at the mesh point and allows receivers to get behind him. Well-undersized frame may cause difficulty holding up in the box at the next level. Receivers can dominate him on blocks and wash him entirely out of the picture. Some angles are too strong making him susceptible to getting juked out.
