2023 Guide: What Ourlads’ NFL Scouting Services said about JI’AYIR BROWN:
Penn State | H: 5113 W: 210 40: 4.65 A: 3114 H: 1018 W: 7534
Two year starter, Trenton, NJ. Was a two year starter at Lackawanna CC before transferring to Penn State in 2020. Versatile safety prospect with an aggressive demeanor. Has played one high deep safety, two high and in the box as an overhang player. Excellent straight line speed he flashes sideline to sideline range in pursuit. Comes downhill hard from deep zones and explodes into tackles with gather and leg drive. As a deep defender he has a smooth pedal and flashes ability to transition, opening his hips and working over the top. Has the speed to chase deep routes over the top. On balls in front of him he is quick to plant and drive and shows solid ball skills attacking the catch point. Has sure hands for interception opportunities. He’s best as an overhang player in the box. Shows short area quickness and burst to break up and make tackles. Plays with knee bend versus blockers and shoots his hands to stun, separate and shed on the move. Makes a lot of tackles close to the line. Can be overaggressive and whiff on a tackle going for the big hit. Not the most instinctive he shows some hesitation in reactions at times. This is noticeable in the deep zones as he can be late reacting and take a bad angle to the ball. Not used often to match receivers in the slot but should be able to run with a vertical route. Route breaks can be a problem as he has some hip tightness. Can be slow to process route combinations and there is some inconsistency balancing multiple routes. Should be a solid core special team player with starting potential.
