Two year starter, Cedar Falls, IA. Consensus All-Big 10 in 2021 and 2022. Winner of the prestigious Butkus award as the best linebacker in the country in 2022. Unique height and length for an inside linebacker. Smart player who gets the defense lined up correctly. Shows excellent leadership on the field. Shows quick downhill reactions to go with solid instincts on inside run fits. Has alley to alley range and can quickly scrape off-tackle to make plays in the backfield. Shows tackling skill when faced up sinking his hips, striking and finishing. Powerful upper and lower body he flashes stun and separation from blockers with the ability to shed on the move. Normally plays with knee bend and rarely stays blocked. He is stout taking on interior linemen working downhill. Effective blitzing he gets a push if blocked and can chase with an open lane. In coverage he uses his length to impact the throwing lane with ability to see and react to multiple threats. Quarterbacks often have to come off intermediate reads in his area. Excellent range he’s always looking for work in coverage and doesn’t get caught covering grass. Has enough speed to carry a seam route with an inside receiver. Doesn’t have the most twitch and there is some hip tightness. His height can be a hindrance when attacking blocks as he has shown inconsistency in pad level versus physical blockers. Climbing lineman can lock him up at times. While he is an extremely productive tackler he has some trouble quickly gathering on tackles and has had some misses on clean shots. Those are rare but notable. Has developed into a solid linebacker in every phase. His football smarts and skill set should be an NFL fit as a three down Mike linebacker from day one.
