Ourlads' Profile:
2022 Guide: What Ourlads’ NFL Scouting Services said about DERRICK DEESE JR.:
San Jose State, 6036 247 4.80. Two-year starter, La Palma, CA. Junior college transfer from Golden West College where he played wide receiver. Lacks some finer technique in his run blocking, but attacks defenders with physicality and aggression. Shows more desire and want-to as a run blocker than skill. Not the guy you want anchoring the back side of slide protection. Long arms. Skills from his time as a wideout are easy to see when he runs after the catch. Gets yards in bunches and chunks. Fluid in transition, and an instinctive route runner. Consistently won at point of contact versus reroutes. Excels at winning catch point through contact and in traffic. His struggles as a run blocker will limit his usage, however for the right team, his ability to run routes and his receiver like gait, will lead to usage in a variety of different alignments. A physical wide receiver in a tight end frame, will lead at least one team to place an in-line/slot/outside matchup problem grade on this prospect. Displayed some focus drops at times on routes bearing into the sideline. Adjusts well to the ball with defenders draped on his frame. Uses body well to protect passes from defenders. Drifts from time to time on breaking routes. Frame and skill set provide a nice size interior target. Will need to learn to use different tempo on routes at times in the NFL.
2021 stats: 47-730, 15.5 ypr, 4 TD. Sixth/seventh round. (A-33 3/4, H-10 1/2, VJ-31, SS-DNP).
