2021 Guide: What Ourlads' NFL Scouting Services said about AMBRY THOMAS: Michigan, 5117 189 4.41. One year starter, Detroit MI. Opted out of the 2020 season to prepare for the draft but did participate in the Senior Bowl. At Michigan he primarily played press man with some exposure to hard corner Cover 2. Michigan corners are known for tight man coverage and Thomas fits the mold. Can be physical in press with jam and reaction. Mirrors cuts off the line with the patience to not get attracted to double moves away from leverage. Rarely gave up leverage and was sticky staying on the hip of a receiver. Cuts off route breaks and has the speed to stay in phase up the field. In Cover 2 consistently rerouted receivers with a physical collision to keep receivers from getting up on the safety. Sinks under the vertical outside release and quickly plants and drives on short underneath throws. Solid ball skills using his length to get his hands to the catch point. Has made some nice interceptions undercutting a route. Can be tough attacking blocks in run support using his hands to shed. Tackles well in space with a nice drive and finish. Showed decent zone awareness at the Senior Bowl and generally had a positive performance. Will need to show he can adapt to all the nuances of multiple NFL coverage. At this point is limited in experience other than press man and Cover 2. Can be grabby mirroring cuts as at times he gets too close to receivers and can separate on a cut. Can be too physical and subject to holding penalties. With his style of physical play he could have a future as a slot corner. Has also shown return skill. 2019 stats: 38 T, 3 TFL, 4 PBU, 3 INT. Third/fourth round. (A-31 1/8, H-8 1/2, VJ-38, SS-NA).
