2017 HighlightsRanked No.4 among Demon Deacons with 79 tackles, despite missing two games and part of a third with injury. That followed a 2016 season in which his five interceptions stood No.2 among ACC defenders, earning Freshman All-America honors from the FWAA. Two of those INTs went for touchdowns, coming vs. Indiana and Virginia. Recorded at least seven tackles in eight of 11 contests last season, topped by a 14-tackle outing vs. Florida State. Bates followed up the next week with 10 tackles in a loss to Clemson. Lone INT last season came in September vs. Boston College. Hails from the same high school as NFL Hall of Famer Rod Woodson, where he also matched Woodson’s record with nine INTs in his senior season.
