Junior entry, two year starter. First-team All-Big 12 in 2023. Has a powerful compact build. Lined up in a two point and three point stance in a wide nine and five technique. Has some versatility as he’s played inside linebacker and has overhang experience as well. Was a nose tackle as a freshman. Flashes very good snap quickness and attacks blocks with knee bend and a quick punch. Strong hands and lower body to stack and shed bigger offensive tackles. Can get ball side leverage on blocks versus outside runs. Can set the edge and get to the alley. Drives through tackles with the gather, strike, and finish. Gets depth in his drops. Can find the throwing lane as a flat defender. Adept at reading and blowing up screens. Has a variety of pass rush moves often using a bull rush into a move. Gets extension with initial charge and turns quickness into power working into a series of moves including stab and chop and push pull. Has a quick spin move he shows as a counter or right after the first step. Plays with great second effort and keeps coming even if stalemated initially. At times fails to locate the ball when taking on a block. Focus can be too much on the block without seeing the big picture. Some movements are segmented and hesitant at times. A little straight line in his rush path and he has some trouble reacting to quarterback movement in the pocket. Lateral agility is adequate but not great. He has been solid on special teams covering kicks and has a blocked field goal attempt this past season. Has rotational pass rush potential and should develop as a 3-4 outside linebacker.
2023 Stats: 43 T, 13.5 TFL, 9.5 sacks, 1 PBU, 3 QBH, 1 BK. Draft projection: 3rd/4th round
