Nebraska, 6012 228 4.62. Three-year starter, Colorado Springs, CO. Second-team All-Big Ten and second-team All-America. Played safety until 2019 when he made the full-time switch to linebacker. Undersized for a full-time inside linebacker role he played both on the edge and over a slot in Nebraska’s 4-3. Was often used as a nickel. High motor player who can run and chase. Quick with his hands he consistently slips blocks on the move without altering his path to the ball. Physical tackler, he can come off a block into a tackle and drive through the ball carrier. Fundamentally sound tackler he keeps leverage in space while gathering and finishing. Used often to blitz, his first step quickness gets him into the backfield and on the ball carrier in a hurry. Changes directions well and is rarely out of position working to the ball. Outstanding in zone coverage he is adept at closing voids between overlapping zones. Safety experience shows up there. He plays multiple routes with proper spacing, sees the quarterback’s intentions and is quick breaking on the throw. Finds the throwing lane and can get to the catch point. Not as effective in man coverage as he is too easily separated on route breaks. Lacks recovery speed when separated. Lack of length shows up at times playing the ball as he makes more tackles than plays at the catch point. His fit will be based on the scheme and he may find a role as a hybrid defender in a zone heavy scheme. Some teams may view him as a 4-3 Will. He should be outstanding on special teams and at least find a home in sub packages.
