2019 Guide: What Ourlads' NFL Scouting Services said about DEIONTE THOMPSON: Alabama, 6010 195 4.55. Junior entry from Orange, TX. One year starter at Alabama. Break out player in 2018 after playing in sub packages and special teams the previous season. Alabama played a one high safety a lot and Thompson played that role the majority of the time. He also would drop to the box and play some quarters. Displayed outstanding range and overall athletic ability. Run/pass read is outstanding and he has a fluid pedal and stop/start quickness on his break. Sudden change of direction with fluid hips. Plays the run with aggression and has tracking ability with good angles moving downhill. Tackles well in space with gather and leg drive. Closes fast and can lay a big hit. In coverage at his best as a cover one deep safety. Remarkable ability to flip his hips to get over deep outside vertical routes and play the ball. Gets to the high point and challenges receiver’s hands. Sudden getting out of his pedal to challenge dig routes. Quick to break on intermediate throws. Positions well in deep coverage to balance routes and read the quarterback’s delivery key. Zone awareness and instincts are still developing but outstanding for his level of experience. A little inconsistent working downhill versus the run as he can under run a bounce to the outside. Some hesitation versus multiple routes and will get under his deep cover responsibility at times. Can get too attracted to a shallow route and lose sight of an outside in vertical route. Appears uncertain at times and false steps when reacting. Has very little man-to-man experience and that is a question for some teams. He is still developing but has tremendous upside. Has been outstanding in kick coverage and will attract a team looking for a safety that can play over the top. 2018 stats: 78 T, 3.5 TFL, 6 PBU, 3 FF, 2 INT. Did not work out at Combine. Second/ third round. (A-32 1/8, H-9 7/8, VJ-DNP, SS-DNP).
