2018 Guide: What Ourlads' NFL Scouting Services said about TROY APKE: Penn State, 6012 200 4.37. One-year starter from Mt. Lebanon, PA. Saw playing time as a backup/sub package player until he became a full time starter in 2017. Good size for the position. Quick initial read and react with fluid backpedal. Usually a deep safety but adjustments put him all over. Has experience as a quarters, half, and one high deep safety, along with rolling down to the box based on formation. Excellent range in the deep zones showing the ability to get to a deep outside vertical route from a half or quarter alignment. Has the speed to stay with a slot or tight end up the field. Very good recovery speed. Smooth transitions in the deep zones with a burst to close. Has ball skills for the pass break. Reads the receiver’s hands and can get his hands to the catch point. Tracks well moving down hill and will attack blocks. Willing to throw his body into a tackle. Will miss tackles by lunging and not wrapping at times. Not extremely instinctive in the deep zones. Does not always see quarterback and threats. Late to react. Will take a bad angle in pursuit at times and will find himself on the wrong side of a block. Needs to consistently square up blocks. Sometimes taking a bad path to the alley will open up a running lane. Is quick to recover but struggles to mirror a quick receiver’s cuts. Apke has been outstanding in kick coverage. 2017 stats: 55 T, 3 TFL, 5 PBU, 3 QBH, 1 INT, 1 BK. BTR:left 4.40, right 4.64. OSR:1/21. Sixth/seventh round. (A-32 3/8, H-8 3/8, VJ-41, SS-4.03).
