After reaching the midpoint of the NFL season, it’s tougher and tougher to pick up solid contributors off of the waiver wire. However, things got a bit more interesting thanks to a couple of trades that took place last night and this morning. Here are a few players to target on the wire.
WR Jamison Crowder, Washington Redskins…A relatively high fantasy draft pick, Crowder saw many of his owners give up on him as late as last week, thanks to poor production and the overall disappointment in Washington’s passing game. As luck would have it, Crowder exploded last week to the tune of nine catches for 123 yards on 13 targets versus Dallas. It seems like Crowder may have gotten his groove back.
QB Jimmy Garoppolo, San Francisco 49ers…Speaking of those trades, the world’s most heralded back up quarterback was traded from the Patriots to a team that really, really, really needs a quarterback. Garoppolo had two very good starts in 2016, but that’s really all that we know. San Francisco actually has some decent weapons that could be put to better use with a legitimate quarterback under center. If the QB position is one of need for you, Garoppolo is a solid option for the second half of the season.
WR JuJu Smith-Schuster, Pittsburgh Steelers…The Steelers have their bye this week, but thanks to Martavis Bryant’s Twitter fingers, Smith-Schuster is a good pick up this week if he’s still available in your league. In Bryant’s absence, JuJu caught seven passes for 193 yards, including a 97-yard touchdown. That was his fourth touchdown of the season and second in two games. Plus, he received a kiss from his coach, which absolutely has to equal good vibes ahead.
Others to consider…
WR Travis Benjamin, Los Angeles Rams…Five catches for 64 yards and a touchdown in Week 8, plus he gives you return yards, if applicable in your league.
RB Rex Burkhead, New England Patriots…Back from injury, Burkhead was a part of the offense for the second straight week, catching seven passes for 68 yards vs. the Chargers.
RB Kenyon Drake/Damien Williams, Miami Dolphins…The other trade sent Jay Ajayi to the Philadelphia Eagles, leaving plenty of carries up for grabs in the Dolphins’ backfield. One of these two backs (or both) will benefit greatly.
WR T.J. Jones, Detroit Lions…The slot receiver had his best game of the season last week, with 4 catches for 88 yards on 8 targets. That’s 17 targets in his last two games.
QB Case Keenum, Minnesota Vikings…He’s likely available in your league and it might be time to pick him up if you need QB help. He threw for 288 yards and two touchdowns last week.
