Ourlads' Analysis:

2017 Guide: What Ourlads' NFL Scouting Services said about CJ BEATHARD: Iowa, 6025 219 4.90. Two-year starter from Franklin, TN. Played in a pro style offense where he took most of the snaps from under center. Was the spark for the Hawkeyes in 2015, leading the way to a 12-2 record, despite groin and hip injuries. Beathard was our top rated senior quarterback heading into the fall, but unfortunately did not take a step forward. The offensive line was settling in and adjusting. Iowa’s best receiver, Matt Vandeberg was injured early in the year as was starting tight end George Kittle. Beathard held onto the ball waiting for inexperienced receivers to separate and ended up giving up coverage sacks. A student of the game who plays well in play action. Handles the ball well on fakes and bootlegs. Patient and poised in the pocket. Quick release on a half roll and waggle passes. Can elude pocket pressure and run for positive yards. A good ball control passer with crossers, hitches, screens, and check downs. Competitive with a tough but focused demeanor. At the Senior Bowl he was mechanically sound but inconsistent in his play. At times he showed good arm strength and at other times he floated the ball on vertical routes. Accuracy was off and was late with delivery at times. A heady player who has the talent to compete for a backup position. Grandson of former NFL GM Bobby Beathard. 2016 stats: 170/301, 1929 yds, 56.5%, 17 TD, 10 INT, -13 yds rushing, 2 TD, 122.3 QB rating. Ball velocity 55 mph. Medical exclusion at Combine due to hamstring pull. Sixth/seventh round. (A-31, H-9 1/8, SS-DNP, VJ-31).
